Tahsiyn A. Ismaa’eel. the owner and principal of the Darul-Amaanah Academy, and a group of children were asked to leave a Deleware public pool for not wearing proper pool attire. Ismaa’eel says she’s been visiting the Foster Brown Public Pool with her participants for 4 years and never had a problem until this summer. The children were wearing shirts, shorts and hijabs when the pool manager approached her and told her wearing cotton in the pool was against city policy. “There’s nothing posted that says you can’t swim in cotton,” Ismaa’eel told Delaware Online. “At the same time, there are other kids with cotton on.”
After being notified by the manager, she agreed to let the children’s parents know about the rule for the future, however this wasn’t enough and the police were called, who then asked Ismaa’eel what time she’d be leaving. “She said there are other people waiting to get in and you have to leave.” Ismaa’eel said.
Mayor Mike Purzycki’s released a statement saying cotton is a real safety concern. Despite all of this, the city does not in fact mention cotton in any of their regulations.
