Kobe Bryant Oscar Academy Invite Rescinded

Kobe Bryant won the Academy Award for his animated short film “Dear Basketball”, ad ode to the game he’d written as he neared retirement in 2015. Kobe was the first African American to win the award. Short Film and Feature Animation branch of the Academy had initially voted to invite Kobe into their branch, however, despite the achievement and the initial vote, the Academy governor’s committee overruled the vote and took back the invite, claiming the retired champ needed to display ‘some evidence of a larger career’ in animated film before being allowed in as an Academy member according to a letter from┬áBill Kroyer, a governor of the animation branch.
