An Australian newspaper depicted Serena Williams in the most offensive way and even Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling couldn’t keep quiet about it. Mark Knight the editorial cartoonist for the Herald Sun newspaper, drew a caricature of Serena stomping on her racket, that looked a lot like a Jim Crow era cartoon. “Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop,” J.K. Rowling reportedly responded.
Williams lost the US Open Final over the weekend after being penalized for calling the umpire a thief. She spoke to the press following the match and explained how she felt it was a sexist call and that men do not receive the same penalties for expressing emotion.
